Diane Bodart

Fellow, 2018-19

David Rosand Associate Professor of Italian Renaissance Art History, Columbia University

Professor Diane Bodart received a Casa Muraro Summer Research Fellowship to spend three months studying materials in the Santo Uffizio section of the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, which conserves the files of the Inquisition trials from 1541 to the end of the Republic of Venice. Professor Bodart’s aim is to systematically collect and analyze the interrogations, which each record the precise description and outward appearance of the defendant on trial, thus offering an incredible series of “portraits” or Renaissance “identikits” of members of Venetian society. Through her organization and analysis, Professor Bodart intends to create a new linguistic tool that will permit more precise descriptions of Venetian Renaissance portraits, especially anonymous ones.
