Installations and Shows
From April 24 to July 18 2026, Galleria Finley at Casa Muraro will present Miracles of Plumbing, an exhibition featuring works by internationally renowned artist Johanna Unzueta, curated by Julia Bryan-Wilson.
The exhibition will be open Thursdays and Saturdays from 2pm to 6 pm.
Taking the intricacies of Venetian water systems as a point of departure, this solo exhibition by the acclaimed Chilean-born artist Johanna Unzueta brings together two distinct but related bodies of her work: hand-sewn felt faucets and indigo abstract drawings based on classical geometries. For the past three decades, Unzueta has investigated issues of labor, production, and gender through fiber-based sculptures that mimic building pipes and municipal drainage tubes. In her drawings, she uses textile tools such as embroidery hoops and needle pricks to create distinctively dazzling abstract imagery. On seas of aquatic blue, lines spiral and intersect to create delicate, optical fields. She employs hand-ground pigments in her works on paper that reference naturally occurring—and wondrously composed—patterns of plants.
For Galleria Finley at Casa Muraro, Unzueta has created a site-specific installation with fabric pipes that takes into consideration the unique challenges of Venice as a "miracle of plumbing" in which water, bodies, and resources are channeled and redirected. Seeing her cloth pipes together with her drawings showcases the artist's interest in everyday feats of engineering across human and non-human realms.
Johanna Unzueta (b. 1974, Chile) is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York and Berlin. Her practice, deeply rooted in the history and practices of labor, spans installation, sculpture, drawing, film, and mural-making. Using materials such as felt, cotton, recycled wood, and natural pigments, Johanna explores themes of economy, hierarchy, and community. Recent exhibitions at institutions such as the 2026 Whitney Biennial, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Tate Modern, and The Drawing Center reflect her commitment to exploring the intersections of art, labor, and social consciousness.
On the occasion of the 19th Architecture Biennale, Galleria Finley presents an installation featuring the research projects and material explorations developed by Lola Ben-Alon and the Natural Materials Lab at Columbia GSAPP. The presentation foregrounds innovative approaches to sustainable design and material experimentation, offering insight into emerging practices at the intersection of architecture, ecology, and fabrication. Concurrently, works by Lola Ben-Alon are on view at the Arsenale, situating the installation within the broader discourse of the Biennale.
