This talk takes early modern Venice as a point of departure to outline some of the possibilities for a critical war studies. Focusing on the ways in which military conflict with the Ottomans shaped seventeenth-century Venetian culture and society, it brings the history of media and communication in dialogue with conquest and empire-building in the Mediterranean. It discusses the militarization of the Venetian public sphere and examines the connections between bellicose foreign policies and domestic power politics in a state still portrayed today as an imperial exception, a peace-loving maritime republic that never called itself an empire.

This event is part of the series "The Life of Venice and its People" celebrating the tenth-year anniversary of the Italian and Mediterranean Colloquium, organized by the Department of Italian at Columbia University in collaboration with Casa Muraro in Venice, and co-sponsored by the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, the Division of Humanities, and the European Institute at Columbia University.
